Big Drinks of East Asia

Every place has those one or two drinks that they are famous for. These drinks vary from type, to flavor, and even the shape of the bottle it comes in. This is proven in two new drinks that have grown in popularity in Japan and Korea; Ramune and Yakult.

Ramune is a big craze in Japan. It is soda inside a bottle, but topped with a marble trapped in the seal. This interesting way to cap the bottle creates a sort of challenge to the buyer. It challenges them to get the marble loose without actually breaking the bottle itself. This idea of a marble capping a bottle didn't start in Japan though. It started with Codd-neck bottles made by English engineer Hiram Codd. This was introduced to Japan, and they picked up the idea of this when Codd-neck bottles would hold lemonade, which is what ramune translates to.

Yakult on the other hand is a probiotic drink made in Korea. Yakult is made up of fermented skim milk, sugar and water with other additives. The one thing that makes it special are the probiotic properties that it has. Yakult has the special lactic acid strain that helps to maintain health. This was created in the 1930s by Dr. Minoru Shirota, who cultured the lactic acid bacteria, which began production of yakult. Ever since then, yakult has been a big hit around the world, coming in different flavors and being marketed around the world.

  1. I like how well you describe the individual drinks. I would love to try yakult after I go to the gym because it sounds healthy and is filled with protein.
