A Common Misconception of American Chinese Cuisine

You walk into the restaurant with your friends and family. You start out with water, and from there you order your choice of drink. You look at the menu and decide to start off with something light, but you know in the back of your mind exactly what you're going to get. You order, eat your dinner, and at the end, you make sure to grab a fortune cookie on your way out. This is just about how a trip to a Chinese restaurant goes, but many things you see and order aren't even really Chinese in the first place.
There are many misconceptions when it comes to Chinese food, and one of the biggest misconceptions is the idea of fortune cookies, which actually isn't even Chinese in the first place. The fortune cookie was actually created in California, but it's actual creator is up for discussion. One theory is a Chinese immigrant who created cookies for his poverty-stricken neighbors that he saw on the street, and inside were bible sayings written by a Protestant priest. Another theory was a Japanese gardener who was fired by one mayor, but re-hired by another and as a thank you, made cookies with thank you notes in them.
Regardless of the story, just think about that great Cali-born cookie that you break open next time you order Chinese.
